Durable CDR Market Recap: March 2026 — Key Deals & Trends

We are back with another edition of the CDR Monthly Recap, a monthly round-up of some of the top news, developments, and market updates from the world of durable carbon removal.

March saw around 1.51 million tonnes contracted, led by deals that saw participation from market actors such as Liferaft, Microsoft, Empacar, Altitude, AMP and Google.

New projects, partnerships, and large funding opportunities, as well as announcements, continue to drive momentum for the industry ahead, alongside various events in the field.

Deals and Partnerships

Deals

Liferaft and Microsoft signed a 10-year offtake agreement for 1 million tonnes of CDR, facilitated by Supercritical. The credits will be delivered from Liferaft’s large-scale pyrolysis facilities in Iowa and Illinois.

Altitude signed an agreement to purchase 305,000 tonnes of CDR from Bolivian company Empacar. The credits from the agreement will be issued on Puro.earth or equivalent methodologies.

Google signed an agreement to purchase 200,000 tonnes of CDR from Colorado-based company AMP. The purchase will enable AMP to add biochar production capacity to their recycling project in the United States.

Boeing signed a multi-year agreement with Carbonfuture to purchase at least 40,000 tonnes of CDR. Carbonfuture will supply the credits through a diversified portfolio, initially sourced from 4 biochar projects across the Global South.

Mercedes-AMG F1 expanded its CDR portfolio, investing in 18,900 tonnes of nature-based, hybrid and engineered projects, including 5 durable CDR methods, through CUR8, across six countries.

The first publicly announced transaction for EU Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming (CRCF)-licensed carbon removal credits was completed, with Adyen and Nasdaq purchasing credits from Stockholm Exergi, in a deal structured by ClimeFi.

DAC company Sirona Technologies completed a multi‑year offtake agreement facilitated by Patch. The credits will be generated from Sirona’s modular DAC projects and will support the deployment of its next commercial facility.

Kenya-based DAC developer Octavia Carbon secured an offtake agreement facilitated by Carbon Direct, supporting the continued scaling of its Hummingbird pilot project. The volume and pricing were not disclosed at the time of announcement.

Partnerships

ClimeFi launched its Beyond 2030 RFP, targeting procurement of 100,000 to 500,000 tonnes of durable CDR on behalf of multiple corporate buyers. The RFP will consider CDR approaches with permanence of at least 200 years and applications will close on April 8.

CURA and Captura announced a collaboration to advance bipolar membrane electrochemical technology, combining their capabilities to develop low-carbon cement production with integrated carbon removal.

Pension Insurance Corporation expanded its carbon removal portfolio via CUR8, purchasing credits from biochar, mineralization, agroecosystems, and direct air capture projects to address its 2025 operational emissions.

Climeworks and Lithos Carbon partnered to bring verified Enhanced Weathering credits to market, building on a relationship dating back to 2023, to deliver 3.5 million tonnes of CDR over more than a decade.

DAC company Aircapture and Almanac Beer Co launched a new commercial beer carbonated using CO₂ captured onsite via a modular DAC system at a California brewery.

The Carbon Business Council launched the Direct Storage of Biomass Coalition, uniting 17 member organizations to advance standards, buyer education, and responsible deployment of biomass storage as a CDR method.

Carbon Removal Canada and BMO announced a two-year partnership to advance Canada's CDR ecosystem through policy leadership, capacity building, and cross-sector collaboration, funded by BMO.

Inherit Carbon Solutions commenced operations on the world's first BECCS project capturing biogenic CO₂ from biogas, with liquefied CO₂ now being permanently stored 2,600 metres below the North Sea.

Bolivian sustainable packaging company Empacar partnered with Puro.earth, Cula, and BioFlux to establish a biochar facility in Santa Cruz targeting approximately 70,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

Euthenia Energy launched its first biochar production site in Spain, processing olive grove residues and converting them into biochar carbon removal credits in the country's emerging CDR market.

Svante, in collaboration with an integrated sustainable packaging company, advanced a U.S.-based BECCS project to the feasibility study phase, targeting capture and permanent storage of over 500,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ per year.

Financing

The Advance Carbon Removal Coalition was launched, bringing together the Canadian government, Carbon Removal Canada, BMO, RBC, Shopify, Vancity, NorthX and ClimeFi, with an aim to mobilize $100 million for Canadian CDR by 2030.

The Swedish Energy Agency launched two funding calls totaling approximately €29.4 million to support research and projects focused on capturing, transporting, and permanently storing biogenic or atmospheric greenhouse gases.

The Canadian Government issued a tender soliciting CDR credit suppliers, as part of its commitment to purchase at least CAD 10 million in carbon removal services by 2030 under the Greening Government Strategy.

Austrian carbon mineralization startup Sequestra secured €3 million in seed funding, led by VSE Beteiligungs-GmbH, to advance its technology for mineralizing industrial waste CO₂ into its first commercial projects.

UK aviation industry body Sustainable Aviation launched a first-of-its-kind Advanced Market Signal, committing over £2 million to purchase greenhouse gas removal credits and stimulate early-stage GGR market development across the sector.

Frontier launched its 2026 Innovation Program, inviting applications targeting ocean alkalinity enhancement, surficial mineralization, and open-system monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) to solve critical scalability bottlenecks in durable CDR.

Google.org has awarded $150,000 to Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, advancing marine CDR research using NASA supercomputers to test ocean iron fertilization and other durable sequestration methods.

Backed by Milkywire’s Climate Transformation Fund (CTF), remove announced the launch of a new Latin America program of its accelerator to support early-stage CDR startups across the region, with a 2026 cohort planned.

Svante acquired project developer Carbon Alpha and its subsidiaries by adding the North Star BECCS project in Saskatchewan to its integrated carbon management platform.

Watershed opened its 2026 Carbon RFP, inviting durable and nature-based carbon removal and superpollutant avoidance suppliers to apply for access to its buyer base of 800+ global companies, with applications closing April 10.

Japan's ENEOS Holdings made a strategic investment in AirMyne to advance the development of its liquid solvent-based direct air capture technology toward commercial scale.

CUR8 received a strategic investment from Acario Innovation, the corporate venture arm of Tokyo Gas, to expand its risk and data infrastructure, support portfolio development and scalable financing for durable CDR supply.

Undaunted opened applications for Cohort 2 of its UK-based CDR Accelerator, a 14-week hybrid programme for TRL 4-7 carbon removal startups covering dMRV, policy, certification, and fundraising, with a deadline of April 19.

Isometric certified the Biomass Storage in Subsurface Mines (BSSM) Module after public consultation, enabling the issuance of carbon removal certificates with durability exceeding 1,000 years through secure mine storage.

Rainbow was officially approved by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) under its Core Carbon Principles (CCP), becoming one of only 3 CDR-focused standards to receive this recognition.

The Carbon Removal Standards Initiative published a whitepaper introducing a Find-Match-Measure framework for integrating enhanced weathering into existing agricultural liming subsidy policies.

Offstream launched a free five-day dMRV Insider's Guide for carbon removal developers, covering key digital MRV decisions to support credit certification, buyer offtakes, and project differentiation.

Carbon Gap, in collaboration with Global Factor, published a roadmap and a report highlighting Spain’s carbon removal potential, highlighting pathways for scalable deployment essential to address the country’s residual emissions by 2050.

ClimeFi published insights from its December 2025 RFP of 142 projects across 39 countries, finding that 58% of projected CDR supply across the 2026- 2030 period remains unreserved.

AFEN published the first mapping of CDR potential across French regions, identifying 25 existing projects and scoring each region's deployment potential across ecosystem and technology-based methods.

Carbon Direct published a paper proposing a framework that pairs superpollutant abatement with durable CDR, enabling companies to achieve both immediate and long-term consistently negative warming profiles.

The Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) and Carbon Removal India Alliance published a policy issue brief examining how carbon markets can scale durable CDR in India, recommending a national carbon removal strategy.

Clean Air Task Force published a report evaluating existing biomass carbon removal and storage protocols, identifying six priority areas to strengthen MRV rigour, additionality standards, and overall integrity across crediting frameworks.

Former Direct Air Capture Coalition founder Jason Hochman launched Ctrl-S, a startup acquiring intellectual property, experimental data, and engineering knowledge from distressed DAC companies to preserve and licence them.
