We are back with another edition of This Week in CDR, a weekly round-up of the top news, developments, and market updates from the world of durable carbon removal.
This week saw some key developments in durable CDR, as Mission Zero deployed its third DAC system at Deep Sky Alpha in Alberta (Canada), while Occidental announced plans to launch the Stratos facility by the end of 2025, and CO₂RE opened applications for early CDR startups to its upcoming accelerator program.

Pricing Perception Gap in Durable CDR

Occidental announced that its STRATOS Direct Air Capture (DAC) facility, the world’s largest, is 94% complete and set to launch by the end of 2025, aiming to capture 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually for permanent storage.
Mission Zero activated its third DAC system at Deep Sky Alpha, Alberta, capable of capturing up to 250 tCO₂ annually for permanent storage. The solar-powered electrochemical unit marks the company’s first international deployment.
Graphyte announced plans to triple the capacity at its Arkansas facility from 14,000 to 45,000 tCO₂ annually after sequestering ~5,000 tonnes to date. Additional British Columbia and Arizona sites are also planned to meet rising demand.

Direct Ocean Removal company Equatic raised $11.6 million in Series A funding led by C3H and Kibo Invest to advance engineering of its 100-kilotonne CDR facility and accelerate commercialization and technology development.
Ottawa-based Terrafixing secured CAD 2.5 million from Canada’s Energy Innovation Program (EIP) to scale cold-climate DAC technology using zeolite beds and achieve costs below $100 per tonne of CO₂ at a large scale.
Research hub CO₂RE opened applications for CDR startups in the UK to pitch as well as participate in its upcoming accelerator program, which is supported by partner organizations Innovate UK and Undaunted.
The International Airlines Group (IAG) announced a new cohort that is part of its 2025 accelerator program, welcoming 29 climate tech startups, including four focused on CDR - Airhive, Kairos Carbon, Mission Zero, and neo-fossil.

The UK government backed HyNet’s carbon capture cluster (including the country’s first BECCS facility), creating 2,800 skilled jobs across Wales and Northwest England, with new projects powering homes and storing millions of tonnes of CO₂.
Research

Cascade Climate launched the Weathering Potential Explorer, a global tool that helps researchers, project developers, and policymakers hypotheses and identify croplands for enhanced rock weathering potential.
Charm Industrial received the first Core Carbon Principles (CCP)-labeled biochar CDR credits from Isometric. This comes after biochar was recently approved as a CCP-label methodology by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM).
The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) approved three biochar and two forest management methodologies to use its Core Carbon Principles label, an indicator of high-quality carbon credits.
Isometric certified the Biochar Storage in Built Materials Module, which details MRV requirements for crediting durable storage of biochar embedded in concrete, asphalt, and other construction products, following a public consultation.
