Methodology

At CDR.fyi, our mission is to accelerate durable carbon removal worldwide. We collaborate with market participants to ensure accurate and trusted reporting of their purchases, deliveries, and verifications, bringing transparency and trust to the durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) market.

Data We Track

We exclusively track durable CDR that lasts for several centuries or longer. For more details on our focus on durability, see this post. Note: While we use the term "tons" for simplicity, all units are in metric tonnes.

Sources of Data

Our CDR data is sourced from: 1) public records; 2) direct submissions from over 300 market participants through the CDR.fyi portal; and 3) integrations with leading registries and marketplaces.

Data Fields

For the full list of fields, see the data fields in our API Docs

Private Fields

Certain fields such as pricing and volume may be marked as private. Private fields are strictly confidential and only used for aggregate reporting, presented in a way that prevents reverse engineering. This data is accessible only to a small core team at CDR.fyi with no conflicts of interest and is strictly protected.

What We Currently Do Not Track

  • Retirements: Retirement signifies that the credits have been used to offset emissions and can no longer be traded or sold. Currently, retirements are not tracked but will be added in the future as we implement links to registries.
  • Issued but unsold credits: For example, credits issued by a project that have not yet found buyers are currently not tracked.
  • Tons removed but not issued as credits or sold: This for example includes all physical production of biochar or carbon removal from large BECCS plants in the US where the credits have not been issued or sold. By focusing on sold credits, we provide a clearer picture of the market activity and financial commitments within the CDR space.

Metrics on the Front Page:

  • Total Sales: Binding agreements for future or immediate delivery of carbon removal credits. This includes offtake agreements (no immediate payment), prepurchases (partial or full payment now), or sales of ex-post credits.
  • Total Sales Value: The estimated size of the CDR credit sales market. We calculate this figure by multiplying the sum of all announced volumes by the average price per method (publicly provided and privately disclosed for aggregate reporting). Large orders with undisclosed prices can significantly impact this figure if they deviate from the average price per method.
  • Total Deliveries: The removal and storage of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere connected to a credit sale, mostly reported on registries. Note that deliveries do not necessarily mean the attached credit has been retired.
  • Price Index: The average known selling price of a ton of CDR across different methods.

Leaderboards:

The overall leaderboards only track credit sales and do not include delivery agreements or LOIs/MOUs.

Suppliers:

Both delivered and undelivered orders can be seen on supplier pages.

Purchasers and Services:

Company pages allow users to see supplier and purchaser orders, including delivery agreements and LOI/MOUs. In the portal, all order fields are shown, while the public website displays only a subset.

Who We Serve:

Our portal offers much more in-depth information and possibilities for analysis than what is displayed on the open web. Anyone can request access to the portal and start using the basic version for free, with two main categories of users:

Data Partners

CDR.fyi operates on a "give-to-get" model. Active players in the CDR market (suppliers, purchasers, marketplaces, and registries) who contribute directly to increasing data availability and transparency in the CDR ecosystem. By sharing data and insights with our community, Data Partners gains access to premium features that support their growth and enhance their market strategies.

Platform Subscribers

CDR.fyi offers tiered data and access plans to companies, investors, consultants, and analysts who seek an in-depth understanding and forecasting of the CDR market but are not in a position to increase data availability and transparency for the industry.
