Boston Consulting Group
Company Context
Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is a global management consulting firm headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1963, BCG employs over 22,000 people across more than 90 offices worldwide. In September 2020, BCG committed to achieving net-zero climate impact by 2030, with a further goal to become climate positive thereafter. The firm has validated science-based targets through SBTi and has held CarbonNeutral® certification since 2018.
Climate Strategy and Role of CDR
BCG's climate strategy combines emissions reductions with an escalating commitment to carbon dioxide removal over time. On the reduction side, the firm transitioned to 100% renewable electricity in 2019, and set a target to reduce business travel emissions, which account for over 80% of its footprint, by 48.5% per FTE by the same year.
CDR plays a central role in BCG's pathway to net zero. The firm has committed to neutralise 100% of its emissions through high-quality carbon removal credits by 2030, and to remove more carbon than it emits beyond that date.
BCG frames its CDR procurement as both a tool to meet its own net-zero target and an effort to help scale the broader removal market, positioning itself as an early adopter willing to sign long-term offtake agreements and, in several cases, to provide consulting services to CDR suppliers alongside its purchases. In line with this portfolio transition, BCG projects that its own blended credit price will rise from approximately $35 per tonne in 2025 to approximately $80 by 2030.
What they have bought
BCG has built a CDR portfolio spanning multiple removal methods and maturity stages. On the technology side, the firm has signed long-term direct air capture agreements with Climeworks and CarbonCapture Inc., and purchased credits from 1PointFive's STRATOS facility in Texas — in several cases bundling the credit purchase with consulting services to the supplier. BCG also became the first long-term buyer of biochar credits from NetZero, a French start-up deploying biochar production in tropical countries. More recently, BCG has diversified further through a portfolio purchase via ClimeFi, spanning biochar, enhanced rock weathering, microbial carbon mineralisation, concrete mineralisation, and subsurface biomass storage.
BCG is a founding buyer of credits from NextGen CDR and a founding member of the First Movers Coalition. Its purchases are tracked on the CDR.fyi Leaderboard (see company page on CDR.fyi).
