In October 2019, IWB publicly announced the construction of a pilot plant, becoming the first European energy utility to do so. In the future, biochar is intended to be offered as a comprehensive energy solution with a regional focus and ecological added value to building and industrial customers. IWB is responsible for planning, construction, operation, and maintenance, as well as for the distribution of heat and biochar.
